Summertime is almost upon us again. Remember summertime? Remember the
sweltering heat, the monsoon rains, and the models that wilt like flowers?
Remember the canceled appointments? It almost makes you forget what it is
that you love about living in South Florida. It makes you wish you owned
a Scene Machine . The portrait of model, Debra Hayes was taken on just such
a day. Only problem is, I don't own a Scene Machine .
Debra was photographed against a warm red sky from the comfort of my studio.
The background was created from a stock slide that I pulled from my files.
The image was projected through a Lightform 42x42 inch panel. Crude, but
effective.
The exposure was for 4 seconds at f8 so it is critically important that
the model remain as still as possible during the exposure. It is also important
that that the light on the model does not also illuminate the background.
Use barn doors, grid spots, and scrims as necessary.
This technique may not be the easiest or most practical, but the fun is
in trying!
