Shooting Model Portfolio's

South Florida, particularly South Beach, has become internationally famous for it's fashion and modeling industry. As a result, there is considerable demand in this area for model portfolios and composites. As a general rule, the models who are likely to hire a photographer for a portfolio shoot are at the beginner and intermediate level. Advanced models tend to use tear sheets in their portfolios. So, don't expect any calls from Cindy Crawford.

Model portfolio photography is not the most lucrative area of professional photography. However, you might consider it as a secondary source of income or to fill out your schedule. Some of the advantages of establishing relationships with professional or semi-professional models are as follows:

Successful model shoots require planning. Study current trends in fashion and glamour. Know what sells. When possible, work with a profession hair and make-up stylist. Occasionally, a professional stylist will work with a photographer and model in exchange for portfolio prints.

For me, working with professional models can be loads of fun. It reminds me of my early days in photography when I used to practice on my teenaged sister. Back then, it was photography for the sake of photography. Very often working with models can lead to very interesting artistic collaborations.

The model featured in this months article is Toni of Ft. Lauderdale. Thanks Toni!
