 President's Message

I hope everyone has weathered the storm and we all made it with little damage and no lost jobs. I know for me, Hurricane Frances turned my business into a shambles for over a week. First we had to deal with several canceled events. Clients were frantic and much had to be done to get ready for the storm. I suspect that most of us did not have an emergency plan for what we were about to deal with. I quickly figured out what really was important to my business. For the most part I was most concerned with data. It's the data, files, CD's, DVD's and drives that store irreplaceable items, my clients images. I put together an additional set of back ups and got my files to several locations so if one house was destroyed I would still have everything somewhere else. With digital files, creating 3 complete sets of data was a great solution. Obviously a film shooter would need a different type of emergency storage to keep the only original set safe under any circumstances. The bottom line is that we act is a way to keep our businesses secure and make sure no matter what we can deliver what we need to for our clients.

The next issue I had to deal with was power, I had none. It was over a week before electricity was restored to my studio and that meant it was virtually impossible to get any work done. I had to make sure that I knew about every shoot I had to be at and my clients knew I was going to be there. Not as easy as it seems without land based, or cell phones that worked. Everything worked out fine in the end but it sure made for a lot more pressure to stay on top of everything.

I also wanted to take some time to thank everyone who has supported me over this past year. It's almost over and the new year is about here. The PPGF, as always, has room for new faces on the board of directors. The more members that help, the better the PPGF is. With more people on the board we can put together better programs, more programs, come up with more benefits and make the PPGF better for everyone. The board of directors has a position for everyone from new members just starting to explore the world of professional photography to the most seasoned professional who may have served for years in the past to build the PPGF. In either case, if you have been thinking about ways to improve the PPGF and want to get involved, just let me know and we'll make it happen.

Inter-Guild Competition

The August program was the Inter-Guild Print Competition between PPGF and the Palm Beach Guild. I am sad to report that this year, the competition was won by the Palm Beach Guild by the slimmest of margins. Overall, the judges were very critical and merit prints were few and far between. Below are the merit prints from the PPGF.
