November 2006

President's Message

Joy Of Competition

The final print competition is over and I believe everyone who entered and those who did the judging enjoyed every moment.  Much could be said about the event, but here’s what impressed me.  First, the amount of new photographers who entered for the first time and merited was gratifying.  It was a treat watching the smiles on their faces and light in their eyes as the judges expressed value in their work by awarding their prints an 80.  I want to commend Jesus Cabrera for taking the lead on setting the tone of the judging, too.  His valor reminded the other judges and himself what competing is all about.

Second, I recognized that the atmosphere of the night carried an aroma of intense competition.  One of my personal goals as President this year was to see a new fervor among members for print competition.  I’m convinced that next year we will see an insurgence in print competition, but I want to encourage all of us to a greater goal.  And that is for guild members to storm the FPP print competition in 2007 and walk away with ALL the gold!  We can do it.  2006 was a dry run.

Party Time

The 2006 Awards Banquet is right around the corner.  To be held November 15th at McFatter Vocational Center in Davie.  If you haven’t RSVP by now time is running out so contact me (954) 921-7959 or Bill Hitz (954) 927-1749.  This is the final social event for the year and we’re looking to make this a wonderful occasion for family and invited guests to see the guild in action.

Peer Sessions

If you want to get in on the fun of working and having a good time photographing a subject with three or four other photographers, then don’t miss the next enrollment for the November 28th session.  The theme for this session will be an environmental male model session coordinated by Greg Roland.  Look below to see images from the September and October sessions.  To sign-up, please contact me at: willie@portraitcorner.com or (954) 921-7959.  Sessions are free and the only requirement is that you give the model prints or a disk with images in exchange for a signed model release.

Enjoy!

Willie L. Hill, Jr., CPP, President

To test drive the concept I made a few quick calls to several members to see who might be interested in shooting.  I figured four photographers would be plenty since we’d all want to be center stage.  Dee Dee Rowe, Lou Gillard, and Greg Roland jumped at the chance to join me.  I solicited Jessica Corbett (a recent engagement client) to be our model.  To make sure Jessica looked her best, Kimberly ; Registration code (if you have it) ; Reglink opened in new frame? ; Name of new frame for reglink ; Image 1 to load ; Image 2 to load ; Image 3 to load ; Image 4 to load ; link 1 ; link 2 ; link 3 ; link 4 ; statusbar msg on image 1 ; statusbar msg on image 2 ; statusbar msg on image 3 ; statusbar msg on image 4 ; resolution (1-8) ; speed of fade (1-255) ; pause (value = milliseconds). ; Progresive fading ("YES" or "NO") ; Optional image over applet ; Over image X offset ; Over image Y offset ; Memory deallocation delay ; Task priority (1..10) ; Min. milliseconds/frame for sync Sorry, your browser doesn't support Java ; Msg in no java browsers Smith provided her makeup expertise.  Several months earlier I’d scouted out the River Walk area in downtown Fort Lauderdale and discovered some nice spots to shoot in.  The stage was set.

Aside from wanting us to build relationships as we exchanged technical information about our preferences on camera equipment and how we were using it, I wanted to give us additional challenges.  First, I wanted everyone to have the experience and opportunity of learning how to direct a subject in the fast tempo of a location photo shoot.  Secondly, I wanted to push our equipment to the limit by photographing at night while utilizing only available light and handheld exposures.  The results were creatively stunning.

I’ve asked each photographer to submit his/her favorite images to accompany this article.  As you can see, it was fun and exciting, and each of us captured something different from the same subject.
