Your camera shoots 35mm proportions and you need to make
an 8x10 print. When you go to crop the image in Photoshop and you realize
that the image is cropped too tight for 8x10 proportions. An 8x10 will crop
through the hands, making for poor composition. The crop will look even
worst when the image is put into a frame, losing another quarter inch on
each side.
The illustation to the right shows what the image will look like if cropped as an 8x10. Adobe Photoshop indicates what the image would look like cropped as an 8x10. The areas outside of the 8x10 crop are darkened. See how the crop cuts through the fingers?
So what do you do? Conventional wisdom is that you break out the clone tool and clone some more background on the sides. But there is an easier way. Using the Transform command you can stretch the background in a few easy steps. Click on the link below to see how it is done, step by step.
