Your Background Is Not Wide Enough?
Photoshop Tutorial by Tom Collins

Your camera shoots 35mm proportions and you need to make an 8x10 print. When you go to crop the image in Photoshop and you realize that the image is cropped too tight for 8x10 proportions. An 8x10 will crop through the hands, making for poor composition. The crop will look even worst when the image is put into a frame, losing another quarter inch on each side.

 President's Message

What's In A Slogan?

Before I dive into my message, I would like to say on behalf of the Executive Board, we wish you a wonderful New Year. A New Year with bright hopes for successful in the new year. There will never be another year like 2005 and it is the Executive Board's desire to help you accomplish whatever goals you have for this upcoming year.

As I give thought to the direction PPGF needs to undertake during 2006, it occurred to me we need to redefine our main goal for our members and the organization. Big companies call it "retooling". Over the past few weeks I have taken a hard look at our mission statement and infrastructure, and I think this new slogan will summarize what PPGF should be about: "The Place Where Top Professional Photographers Train and Compete".

So, how does this slogan fit into your roll as a member? For one, we will no longer have "meetings" (meetings are boring). As a creative person I know you would rather attend a training session or workshop, and the upcoming Guild sessions will cater to your intellect. The Executive Board is lining up some fantastic speakers, social events, and workshops to bring life back into "our burned out photographic lives". This is not a one-way street however, where you, as a member, can come soak up the knowledge without giving anything back. We're looking for participation. By participating: 1) You'll encourage other photographers to attend and join, 2) You'll advise us of ideas & opportunities that will benefit the entire guild, and 3) You'll support the other members by being present whenever the Guild sponsors any event.

Competing. As a kid there was a little saying that goes like this: "I dare you". Mostly boys used it to goad a friend into doing something stupid. Now, I don't want to goad you into doing something crazy, but I do want to challenge you. (Editor's Note: I must get this off my chest. I'm tired of the West Palm Beach Guild beating the tar out of PPGF every inter-guild competition. Okay! Now I feel better). Our guild has some of the top merit winners in the FPP. We're all contenders. Show us your stuff. So I dare you. I dare each of you to: 1) Enter 8x10 prints in the monthly raw competition so the rest of us can rise to the top, 2) Compete in the Inter-Guild Competition, and 3) Refuel the flames of local guild competition so we can take the state competition by storm and make a name for ourselves as well as our guild.

What's in a slogan? Here are a few buzzwords. Recite their slogans if you can: Nike, Capital One, Chevy, and PPGF.
