PPGF Blog

In an effort to keep up with the latest technology PPGF is now blogging. For those that do not know, a blog is a web log. In essence, it is another way for the association to communicate. For the time being, the content on the blog is the same as on this page, only in a different form. The PPGF Blog is located at http://ppgf.com/gce/gce-news/index.php.

If used correctly, you will automatically know when there is a new post to the blog. There is no need for us to send you an email. There are a variety of 'news readers' and desktop appliances available that notify you immediately when there is a new post to a blog. The site, Bloglines, offers a FREE blog aggregating service and offer a variety of "notifiers" to let you know when there is new content. Additionally, if you wish to begin a blog, Bloglines makes it easy to create one and will host it for FREE. Some browsers such as Safari come with feed readers built it. You can also bookmark an RSS Feed and check it on a regular basis.

The concept of Blogs is also known as RSS (Reaaly Simple Syndication) or XML. This is also the technology that is embedded in this page to provide the news from the New York Times, traffic report, as well as all of the information located in our RSS Portal. The beauty of XML content is that it updates automatically.

Eventually, the blog will replace the GCE Newsletter. But for now, both systems will remain. You might also want to investigate Photoblogs.org. A lot of photographers are already promoting themselves using blogs. Some examples are as follows:

So, add the terms RSS, XML to your vocabulary. Over time, we are sure to see more and more sites using this new technology. The best part of all is that most of this technology is FREE!

 President's Message

Feeling Proud

January's Training Session was one of the most exciting meetings I've attended since becoming a PPGF member. Many reasons come to mind, especially the information-packed program on Senior Photography that was presented by Bruce Wilson. This guy knows his craft and how to share it. But the "best" nugget of information I received from Bruce came during the late dinner we had after the meeting. He said, "Your guild is going to do great this year. I could feel the energy in the room". That compliment coming from an outsider truly made me feel proud.

I was proud of the members who show up on time and invited six new visitors. I was proud of the fact that attendance was so high we had to keep bringing in chairs for folks to seat on; the room was packed. (I foresaw this wonderful problem and the Executive Board has already solved this problem. Our new and enlarged meeting place will be Room 414). Most of all, I was proud of the fact that all of the hours of planning the Executive Board put in over the passed two months came to fruition with great success.

However, we cannot rest on past successes. The next challenge for PPGF members to rise to the top comes in March: Guild Print Competition. The stakes are high this year because we have one of the greatest image-makers of all time among usMonte Zucker. In all of my lifetime I never dreamt of competing against one of my most admired photographers. Now some of you might want to shrink away from competing against the likes of Monte, but knowing a little of his character I believe he would encourage you to get in the race and compete. Every one and every print is a contender. (Wouldn't it be something to score a few points above a "Monte" print?) So, don't wait until the second week in March to rush about getting prints ready. You're fooling yourself. Today is the time to select, print, and prepare your images and albums for competition.

Finally, next month the Executive Board hopes to have a simple plan available for you to receive your annual dues for free. That's a savings of $120.00.

What's ahead? Well, as Bruce said, "Our guild is going to do great this year". Stick around there's more to come.

See you at the Computer Geeks Vs Digital Photographers training session on February 15th @7.30P. Bring an employee or bring a friend; the information will be worth the admission.

Willie L. Hill, Jr.

President
