Condolences

The PPGF Officers, Board, and members wish to express condolences to the family of our President, Willie Hill, Jr., for the passing of his father, Willie Hill, Sr. Mr. Hill passed away on Monday, April 10, 2006.

April Program - Direct Marketing

The April program will take place on Wednesday, April 19th and feature Paul Jacobs on Direct Marketing. Do you have a marketing plan? You may be surprised to learn that you can not save time by unplugging your clock any more than you can save money by not advertising. In many cases, a targeted direct marketing campaign is more effective than newspaper, radio, or television advertising. In order to reach your financial goals you must have a plan.

Arrive by 7:30 pm to get a good seat and to network. The program starts promptly at 8:00 pm.

 President's Message

Last's month's Guild Print Competition will go down in my annuals as one of my most memorable events since becoming a PPGF member. I have entered guild competition before, so what made this particular one so special? Was it the quality of the images, the amount of entries, or the amount of photographers that participated? In all honesty it was the judges: Jerry Corbato, Julie Hughes, and Mike Moya.

We all know that being on the receiving end of print judging can be like walking through a live pistol range. More than likely your ego is going to get wounded or mortally destroyed. Not so with Jerry, Julie, and Mike. These judges performed their duties with intelligent scoring, compassion for the printmaker's idea, and a healthy amount of encouragement that left the photographer knowing that it wasn't all about the judges' prowess. Whether a print scored high or low, they made it all worthwhile to have entered. Thank you ladies and gentlemen for a job "well done". My hat is off to you, and Tom Collins who was responsible for assembling this team of judges.

Finally, I have come full circle when it comes to print competition. I got to see first-hand what it is like to witness someone you have tutored in photography achieve their "first merit" print. There were a couple of these "new bees" and they scored heavily against seasoned competitors. It was a delight seeing the pride and sense of accomplishment on their faces as they claimed their work and awards. There's nothing like scoring that first "80". For these photographers I hope they don't make this the last time they elect to compete against fellow photographers. It was fun.
